Pelvic Floor Workshop and Teacher Training with Special Guest, Leslie Howard
Proper strengthening and stabilizing of the pelvic floor helps to create the correct foundation of each movement in the body. This is the true meaning of "core work." Whether you experience any of these conditions (or are just plain curious about this region of the body) this workshop is for you:
Before change is possible, you must be able to visualize, find and access the muscles of the pelvic floor. In this workshop we will locate, assess, soften, stretch, strengthen and exercise the various muscle groups of the pelvic floor, discuss what mula bandha is (and is not), abdominal health and how to utilize the pelvic floor in asana.
The afternoon will begin with anatomy, lecture and discussion, followed by subtle experiential movements to awaken your understanding of this often ignored area. Then we will begin with a series of specific exercises and asanas for the pelvic floor. We conclude with some asana that spotlights the pelvis and hip joints. Handouts are provided to help you retain what you have learned. Bring your friends, sisters, mothers and daughters. Although helpful, no previous yoga experience is required. This workshop qualifies for continuing education credits with Yoga Alliance.
In this twenty hour workshop (starting with workshop above and continuing for three additional afternoons), we will delve deeper into how to teach students with pelvic floor issues and applying Pelvic Floor YogaTM. Topics will include:
The training will include homework for the students to better facilitate learning and understanding of the subject. The required reading for the training is Pelvic Liberation, by Leslie Howard (the e-book is included with the 20-hour teacher training), and The Female Pelvis by Blandine Calais-Germain. The first six chapters of Woman by Natalie Angier are recommended reading, but not required. The training can be used for continuing education for Yoga Alliance and NCBTMB. Each day we will have a short break.
To be certified as a Pelvic Floor Yoga TM teacher: In addition to taking the full 20-hour PFY training, you must complete the PFY Certification program. The program includes: application, exam, 2 projects and fee of $250.00 total. Administered by Leslie Howard, certification must be completed within one year of taking the teacher training, and takes an estimated 10-15 hours to complete. The process includes: a personal research project, a written exam, and working with two different students with pelvic floor issues (documentation and proof of research required). 200-hour yoga teacher training or other certification approved by Leslie is required to apply for the PFY teacher certification.
