The Birth doula workshop includes hands-on examples of how to provide continuous effective physical and emotional support to women and her partner during labor and birth based on the most current evidence in a way that is appropriate and engaging to millennial families.

The workshop is for anyone interested in assisting women and their families to have a satisfying birth experience. It uses texts and supplementary literature, videos, slides, small group activities, hands- on practice and role-play to develop theoretical knowledge and practical skills as a doula.

This program is completely bi- lingual (English, Spanish) offering the training in English and Spanish. To be eligible to attend this training, you must have knowledge of conversational Spanish. You must also be able to read and understand more than conversational English (for example, you must be able to understand a doctor describing clinical terms in English).

Students enrolled in the program will be eligible candidates to become certified once they attended the workshop and completed the activities suggested in the Certification Packet.

On completion of the workshop, participants will be able to:

• Describe the significance of birth to women and their families
• Define the role of the birth doula
• Explain the DONA International Standards of Practice and Code of Ethics for the birth doula
• List benefits of continuous support by a birth doula on obstetrical and psychological outcomes based on the research
• Describe the emotional and physical needs of laboring women and their partners
• Compare specific characteristics of laboring women who are and are not coping well
• Demonstrate comfort measures and optimal birth positions for laboring women
• Analyze the birth doula’s role when her client has an epidural
• Describe the birth doula’s role in the prenatal and postpartum visit
• Describe the birth doula’s role during a cesarean birth
• Describe the birth doula’s role with the family during the immediate postpartum period
• Discuss the process for DONA International birth doula certification

The DONA International approved workshop includes an Introduction to Childbirth Education, a 24 hour course of actual teaching plus two refreshment breaks of 15 min. each day (midmorning and mid afternoon) and an hour lunch break daily.

After completion of our workshop attendees will have the educational requirements (birth doula training, childbirth education and breastfeeding education) needed for certification as birth doulas with DONA International.

About the instructor:
Elena Carrillo is the proud mother of four and grandmother to eight. Ms. Carrillo has been a childbirth educator and doula for almost 45 years. As Director of International Certifications in Anahuac  ́s University postgraduate program “Perinatal Specialist” in Mexico and DONA approved birth doula trainer, she has trained doulas, childbirth educators, and lactation educators around the world. More than 2,500 attended births and almost 4, 000 couples taught confirm that childbirth education, labor and post partum support ensure the best outcome for mothers and babies, regardless of where the birth occurs. She has been successfully teaching this DONA Approved training for 25 years traveling internationally, taking the workshop wherever it has been requested.
