Sandy Caldwell
Instructor

After graduating from Antioch College with a BA in Environmental Design, Sandy Caldwell emigrated from the East Coast to California with a spiritual community called the Church of the Divine Birth. They were all encouraged to ‘do what we love’ in terms of vocation. Sandy became a homebirth midwife and was surprised when some of the other community members picked other vocations. For her, being with a family as their newest family member arrived was the best job in the world, bar none.

During those years her three daughters were born (two at home, one in the hospital). In the 1980s she transitioned to high tech marketing just as the PC was taking off. She spent 17 years in various managerial positions, primarily in software product management and OEM account manager. She worked with Altos Computers, Wyse Technology and Adaptec. She is a proud alumna of the Institute for Women’s Leadership and contextual leadership is dear to her heart.

In 2000, Sandy first heard of doulas. With her children grown, she became a DONA-trained birth and postpartum doula and trained as a Birthing from Within childbirth mentor. She has supported hundreds of families in childbirth and during the postpartum time.

She has continuously educated herself and has been a member of the Association for Prenatal Psychology and Health, The Weston A Price Association and has studied the respectful child-caring approach of Magda Gerber and the RIE method. She is now in the happy role as a grandmother to four beautiful people with whom she is given regular opportunities to practice! She was a founding board member of Bay Area Birth Information and Sanctuary for Birth and Wellness. She was also a Blossom Birth board member and has been active in the local birth community throughout her time as a doula.
